How to report content and assign moderators

How do I report content?

Making Periscope a safe place for our community is a top priority. You can learn more about the types of content we don’t allow on Periscope in our Periscope Community Guidelines

If you come across content that you believe is in violation of our Community Guidelines, we encourage you to report the broadcast directly through the app or on web.

When watching a broadcast on iOS or Android, select the more icon (...) next to the comment field, Say something…, and tap the Report Broadcast button. Once you have selected this, you will be prompted to select a reason for the report. The reasons you can select are Self-Harm, Violence, Sexual Content, Child Safety, Abusive Behavior, Private Information, or Other Reason (if the other reporting reasons don’t address what you’re seeing). Once you’ve selected a reason, you’ll be prompted to confirm your report by selecting Report Broadcast in a pop-up modal.

When watching a broadcast on web, you can report a broadcast by selecting the more icon (...), clicking Report, and selecting a reason for your report.

To report a comment on iOS or Android, select the comment and tap Report Comment. Once you have selected this, you will be prompted to select a reason for the report. The reasons you can select are Abuse, Spam, Sexually Inappropriate, or Other Reason (if the other reporting reasons don’t address what you’re seeing).

On web, you can report a comment in a live broadcast by hovering over the comment, clicking the more icon (...), and selecting Report. You’ll be able to choose from the same reporting reasons available on iOS and Android.

How does comment moderation work?

Comment moderation is a feature that empowers our community to report and vote on comments that they consider to be spam or abusive:

  1. When a comment is reported, a few viewers will randomly be selected to decide if the comment is offensive. They’ll be asked to select Abuse, Spam, Looks OK, or Not Sure based on their assessment of the reported comment.
  2. If the majority of voters agree that the comment is abusive or spam, the commenter will be notified that their ability to chat in the broadcast has been temporarily suspended. Another offense will result in their chat capabilities being suspended for the remainder of the broadcast. Repeat offenses will result in the timed suspension of chat in other broadcasts they enter.

Broadcasters can opt out of having their broadcasts moderated and viewers can opt out of participating in moderation.

How do I assign chat moderators in my broadcasts?

Chat moderators are mutual follows you select who can mute individual audience members in your broadcast (if someone is muted, the muted message is hidden, and they won’t be able to send additional chats). At the end of your broadcast, you can see a list of the viewers that your moderators muted, and choose whether or not you want to block them.

You have comment moderation settings to control who moderates your broadcasts and whether you moderate others’ broadcasts. You can access these settings from your Periscope profile by selecting Comment Moderation.

For your broadcasts, you can enable/suspend viewer voting (allowing viewers to vote on whether comments that get reported in your broadcasts are spam or abusive) and assign chat moderators. You can choose to have viewer voting, chat moderators, or both.

To assign chat moderators

  1. Select Comment Moderation on your Periscope profile.
  2. Tap My Moderators.
  3. Search mutual follows for the moderators you’re looking to add and select them (accounts shown with Unavailable to moderate subtext can’t be selected).
  4. Tap Add in the upper right corner of the screen.

To remove chat moderators

  1. Select Comment Moderation on your Periscope profile.
  2. Swipe left over the chat moderator you want to remove.
  3. Select Remove.

For other broadcasts, you can enable/suspend your participation in voting on whether a reported comment is abusive or spam (I want to vote), enable/suspend whether you want to be added as a moderator by broadcasters you follow (I want to moderate), and view and manage a list of broadcasters who have added you as a moderator (Broadcasters I help moderate).

To remove yourself as a moderator for a broadcaster you follow

  1. Select Broadcasters I help moderate.
  2. Swipe left over the broadcaster you no longer want to moderate for.
  3. Select Remove.

If you are a moderator, you can mute a comment by tapping on it and selecting Mute. On iOS and Android you can also swipe left on a message to mute it. Muting hides the comment from everyone and mutes the commenter for the rest of that broadcast. To unmute someone, tap on one of their muted comments and select Unmute.

How do I opt out of comment moderation?

Broadcasters can opt out of having their broadcasts moderated and viewers can opt out of participating in moderation by visiting Profile > Settings.
